SUKETA: Japanese-style Papermaking Screen & Frame

My sometime efforts at building better mousetraps--otherwise known as Ann-Ovations

(the inventive arm of AIMIA ART WORKS)--led to the creation of this handcrafted variation on the tool used for fine papermaking in the Japanese tradition (a long story).

Traditionally, a suketa consists of a handsewn screen (su) of very thin bamboo strips and a hinged frame (keta).  This modern take made of  lightweight cypress features a mortised-in side guide, beveled rails to reduce the work of casting off, lightweight and removable struts, and easily flip-closed solid brass clasps

(optional on very small suketas).

Each keta has been carefully crafted

to fit its su precisely.

SIZES AND AVAILABILITY:  Su sizes on hand are 9” x 12”, 11” x 17”, 12” x 18”, and 18” x 24”.  Rail widths may vary up to 1/4” to accommodate su with wider handles or larger su (larger frames).  Since su are made to order by hand, there can be considerable lapse time between ordering  new or custom sizes and delivery from overseas. Once we have the su, however, a keta can be built and finished within three weeks.

Profound thanks to master paper artists

Tim Barrett, Aimee Lee, and Julie McLaughlin for generously sharing their advice and expertise in our quest to make this the very best tool  of its

kind available.
